Apple Releases Safari 5 Browser

Apple released the latest version of their web browser, Safari, into the wild.

…of the security flaws. Others, however, were tackled by individuals and a group of hackers who won $15,000 in a contest to hack into the iPhone through its version of the Safari browser.
Among the new features in Safari 5 are:

More support for emerging HTML5 technologies
fullscreen HTML5 video playback
closed captioning in HTML5 video
HTML5 geolocation support
dragging of elements
HTML5 sectioning
Safari Reader, an easier way to read multi-page articles on the Web
DNS prefetching, which makes page loading faster

Safari 5 was not released for the iPhone and iPod touch, but will most likely appear in iOS4, scheduled for release at the end of June, and for the iPad later this year. Many of the security exploits were discovered on the iPhone, which has been the target of recreational hacking.

Apple Safari is available for Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) and Windows XP, Vista, and 7. Apple also released Safari 4.1 containing back-ported bug fixes for Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)….
