News Update: Gmail and Google Voice integration allows users to make phone calls from browser
According to Computerworld.com, Google announced Wednesday that it would merge Google Voice with Gmail — a move that will allow users to make phone calls directly from the browser. Calls to the US and Canada are free at least until the end of the year and calls to other countries are only 2 cents per minute. The service essentially works like a regular phone call. Users can click the “call phone” button at the top of their chat list and enter a contact number. Users choose their own numbers, which can be applied to 6 different devices that can be set up to all ring at the same time or not at all. Calls are free to anyone in the US or Canada, and 2-cent-per-minute calls to 30 select countries. Voicemails are transcribed into text, which are then forwarded as an e-mail to users’ g-mail accounts. The newly integrated Google Voice will also support video chat, making it a formidable competitor with Skype. User tests so far have rated call quality as “very, very good.”
