Mozilla Unleashes a Rather Disappointing Firefox 3.6.4 RC

Mozilla has just published the first (and possibly last) release candidate build of its final major update of the 3.6 generation of its Firefox web browser. Version 3.6.4b6 is officially described as the RC preceding the final released and integrates out of process plug-ins as well as OpenGL 2 hardware acceleration for full screen videos.

…I would not call it negative, but rather realistic. 3.6.4 b6 (RC) is a clear step down from 3.7a5. It is time for Mozilla to overdeliver, not underdeliver. You are correct that IE9 is still some time about, most likely half a year. But even if we leave IE9 out of the comparison, Firefox does not look to great against Chrome and it is Chrome Mozilla needs to defend itself right now. The best guess at this point is that Firefox is still taking share from IE, but it is bleeding share to Chrome. Being between two strong rivals is never a good position to be in and 3.6.4 delivers less than we anticipated. But, as said, perhaps this is just a hiccup and the final will be much faster. Firefox 4 needs to come in time and can’t slip. I agree that there are many ways to determine browser speeds, but these two are common indicators and it is very surprising to see how much slower 3.6.4 is compared to 3.7a5, at least in these two disciplines. As far as Chrome 6 is concerned absolutely do we need to compare FF 3.6.4…
