Major Flaw Found in Apple’s Safari Browser

Unfortunately, Apple didn’t appear to realize that it was necessary to screen what it allows to access this data. Security researchers revealed that a simple web form can grab much of this data - first name, last name, work place, city, state, and email address — no questions asked.

…security, as it is not possible to compare the vendors based on number of vulnerabilities alone. Apple’s supporters were quick to attack the report. AppleInsider writes:Not all vulnerabilities are equal: Secunia outlines five levels of criticality ranging from minor not critical issues to extremely critical problems that can result in remote exploits without any interaction from the user, and for which active exploits are already known to exist. Yet Secunia’s vulnerability report totals throw all these various types of flaws together into sums that are frequently used for meaningless comparison purposes. It’s ironic that almost simultaneous to the report another significant security flaw in Safari aired. Safari Apple’s browser software has oft seen releases so buggy to the point that they were unusable. Safari 5 certainly offered some improvements in that department, but it apparently doesn’t fair particularly better in the security department than past releases, including Safari 4 which had a flaw so severe…

Certified Lies: Big Brother In Your Browser

You probably feel safe when you see the padlock on your browser window indicating secure communication with your bank or e-mail account. What if instead of worrying about man-in-the-middle attacks, it became government-spy-in-the middle eavesdropping?

…a fresh installation of Windows 7 will list 15 CAs in the operating system’s Trusted Root Store. Sadly, however, this interface is terribly misleading as it doesn’t reveal the fact that Microsoft has opted to trust 264 different CAs. This means any web browser that depends upon Microsoft’s Trusted Root Store (such as Internet Explorer, Chrome and Safari for Windows) ultimately trusts 264 different CAs to issue certificates without warning. Firefox is the only major browser to maintain its own database of trusted CAs. Each of the 264 root CAs trusted by Microsoft, the 166 root CAs trusted by Apple, and the 144 root CAs trusted by Firefox are capable of issuing certificates for any website, in any country or top level domain. You don’t think the government will use their own CA which could be tracked back to them if discovered, do you?
To be fair, however, all encrypted streams that travel over the Internet are susceptible to government spying, not just those that use Microsoft technology.
How does this affect…

How to use YouTube’s video editor

Back in June, YouTube released an experimental tool that had been long asked for by its users: a browser-based video editor.

…Nudging a clip can be accomplished by clicking the little left and right arrows that can be found on the video trimmers. Each of these adjusts the playtime by 1/15th of a second.

Tip: If you want a finer level of control, you can hit the little left and right arrows that are on the top and bottom of the in/out points. These “nudges,” as YouTube calls them, go forward or backward by 1/15th of a second, which can help give you a more exact stop or end point than you’d get with your mouse.
4. Audio (optional)
While you can’t adjust the volume level, or add an audio track of your own, you can use YouTube’s AudioSwap feature to add music to your creation.
It’s worth noting that just like using AudioSwap on a standard YouTube video, using it in YouTube’s editor completely removes any audio that was already in your video. You can add only one audio track to your work, so you have to choose wisely.
Tip: If you’re planning to use YouTube’s audio over your own, you…

Adobe: Flash to take 3D graphics plunge

In a move that could keep ties with online games programmers strong, Adobe Systems is adding 3D graphics support to a coming version of its widely used browser plug-in. The move is an important advancement for Flash, a software foundation that eases programmers’ difficulties with incompatibilities among various operating systems

…gwhiz2K That’s correct. The API for hardware-accelerated H.264 decoding is a recent phenomenon, though Adobe has acknowledged there were other reasons Flash performance on Mac OS X didn’t match it on Windows. Adobe added some hardware acceleration for other areas in Flash Player 10.1. Like this

Chrome with its Chromium is faster than Firefox, escpeailly when you have a slow connection like me.. Like this Reply to this comment 2 people like this comment by ivorycruncher July 1, 2010 8:27 AM PDT I’m all for this, but for Firefox to really be practical in an enterprise setting, it needs to obtain remote policy management capabilities, so that administrators can remotely control browser settings, install/configure add-ons, etc. You can set policies for Firefox, but it can only be done so manually on individual workstations. There is no centralized means for doing this, unless you MacGyver your own method for distributing the policy files to workstations. IE can be almost completely controlled by group policy, and Firefox just can’t compete in that area yet….

IE reverses usage share slide; Microsoft cheers

After years of dwindling usage, Microsoft’s browser has, at least for now, stemmed losses. And the gain comes at Firefox’s expense…

Firefox on the iPhone? Mozilla submits Firefox Home to Apple

We’ve known that Mozilla has been working on a version of its Firefox browser for iPhone called Firefox Home. On Wednesday, it submitted its attempt to Apple. Read this blog post by Jessica Dolcourt on iPhone Atlas.

…If you’ve been one of the many clamoring to see Firefox running on an iPhone, you may get your chance–of sorts.
Back in late May, Mozilla announced that it would be creating an
iPhone version of its
Firefox browser–though the solution is not a browser itself. On Wednesday, Mozilla submitted its Firefox Home iPhone app to Apple for testing–and, it hopes, for approval.
The free Firefox Home is more of a window to your Firefox browsing rather than a competing browser itself, which Apple’s software development kit prohibits. Rather, the app relies on Firefox Sync, a cloud-based syncing technology that promises to securely sync your desktop bookmarks, history, and open tabs across Firefox browsers on desktops, mobile phones, and tablets. You’ll be able to view recent Web sites directly from Firefox Home via a WebKit viewer or by opening your previously-visited Web pages in the default
Safari browser. On the coding end, Firefox Home’s URL viewer is based on WebKit, the same technology that powers the default…

…Windows/Mac/Linux: Mozilla just pushed out a new stable Firefox update, Firefox 3.6.4. The most notable feature in the update: Firefox now has crash protection (like Chrome) that prevents Flash, Silverlight, and Quicktime crashes from bringing down your entire browser. Unfortunately crash protection doesn’t yet support OS X (but OS X is still receiving an update, presumably of smaller bug and stability fixes). There’s not much else to know about the update beyond that, other than the fact that you can go grab it now or hit Check for Updates in your Firefox menu to use the built-in update tool.
Firefox 3.6.4 is a free download for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.
