Vendor Inaction Leads Researcher to Disclose Safari, IE flaw

White Hat Security CTO Jeremiah Grossman says that the four major browsers have critical weaknesses that have yet to be addressed by their respective companies, and could expose users’ passwords, e-mail addresses, and more to attackers.Grossman plans to demo a proof-of-concept attack at next week’s conference.

…If you use the autocomplete features in Safari, certain versions of IE, Firefox, or Chrome, you could be making yourself vulnerable to identity theft and other attacks, according to one security researcher scheduled to speak at the Black Hat conference next week. White Hat Security CTO Jeremiah Grossman says that the four major browsers have critical weaknesses that have yet to be addressed by their respective companies, and could expose users’ passwords, e-mail addresses, and more to attackers.

Grossman plans to demo a proof-of-concept attack at next week’s conference. As most of us know, if you have autocomplete turned on in many browsers, you just have to begin typing a letter or two in one of the fields before they all fill in with your name and address, possibly your credit card number, and more. Grossman says attackers can simply create a page with hidden form fields that use JavaScript to enter letters and numbers into each field until it finds one that’s a hit, and the browser autocompletes it….

The Battle For Your Browser’s Homepage

Do you create your own local start page?

…Many people fall into one of two categories when talking about their browser homepage. One side wants it minimal, something that loads fast and gives them only what they need, like a blank page or the Google search. Others like their homepage to pack a punch, and include utilities to monitor and manage their web content. The first group is easily pleased, and can just point their browser to about:blank and be done with it. For everyone else though, there is a multitude of choice. Do you create your own local start page? Open to Yahoo or MSN? Use a third-party website designed for this? If you want to get more out of your home page without a lot of digging, this guide is for you. We’ll be comparing three of the top dynamic starting sites iGoogle, Netvibes, and Pageflakes to see how they stack up.

iGoogle
If you use a lot of Google products, you likely already know iGoogle. It can work with or without a Google account, however the account is wise to have if you’d like to save your settings permanently, or use…

User interface overhaul arrives in Firefox 4 beta

Mozilla has published the first Firefox 4 beta release. Ars takes a hands-on look at the browser’s new and improved user interface, finding a mixture of promise and awkwardness.

…design work is still ongoing for Mac OS X and Linux. The new Windows theme is intended to match Microsoft’s glass aesthetic. The tab bar was moved to the top of the window where it melds seamlessly with the titlebar. The conventional menu was stripped out and replaced with an orange lozenge that is mounted in the top left-hand corner of the titlebar. The entire title region and the inactive tabs are semi-transparent. The inactive tabs are slightly frosted for readability.

The new main menu leaves out a lot of the standard items that were previously accessible through the conventional menu bar. Many of the omitted items are still easy to reach through contextual menus and other parts of the user interface, but there are several features such as private browsing and the download window that are no longer easily discoverable. You can still use those features by turning back on the classic menu or hitting Alt to temporarily activate it. It’s likely that these features will be exposed in more practical ways as…

…A recent change to IBM’s internal IT policy has made Firefox the company’s default Web browser. The move is a major endorsement of the browser’s suitability in large-scale enterprise environments. IBM plans to roll it out to employees on new computers and will encourage its staff of 400,000 to use it on their existing systems.

Bob Sutor, IBM’s vice president of Linux and open source software, discussed the company’s motives for adopting Firefox in a blog entry published this morning. He says that its transparent development model, strong security, and robust support for Web standards and extensibility have made it the “gold standard” for open source Web browsers.

Sutor contends that Mozilla’s efforts have “reinvigorated” the browser market, bringing standards and interoperability to the forefront. He believes that company-wide adoption of the browser will help accelerate IBM’s shift towards cloud computing.

“There’s another reason we want to get as many of our employees using Firefox as soon as possible,…

To have a favicon, you’ll have to upload the favicon.ico file into the root directory of a web server. However, those who are using the Blogger platform would have the default Blogger favicon uploaded. To change the orignial Blogger favicon to your personal one, you’d have to first host it somewhere. Chromium-based Flock beta offers useful social features

Flock has released a beta of the next major version of its social networking browser. The new version, which is based on Google’s Chromium project instead of Firefox, offers significant performance and usability improvements over its predecessor.

…The bottom line

After spending a day with the browser, I am impressed with the usefulness of its integrated social functionality. The social networking additions in Flock are unobtrusive and build naturally on top of the solid experience that you would get with regular Chrome, meaning that it gives you practical extras without requiring you to give up the speed or usability of Google’s browser.

Social networking features aren’t for everyone, and there will always be Twitter haters who don’t see the value. That said, social networking is gaining mainstream acceptance and is an increasingly important aspect of the Web for many users. Unlike the previous version, the new Flock aims to cater to all social network users, not just the obsessive social fanatics. Even users who prefer stand-alone desktop social networking clients will still find value in Flock’s integration features, like social search and easy link sharing.

Although I like the new Flock, there are still some things that it gets wrong. The…
