In The Coming HTML5 Browser Wars, The Markup Should Remain The Same

On Monday, Google made a big splash with a customized Arcade Fire video page that showed off all the cool things HTML5 can do, from video, animations and 3D rendering to gorgeous fonts and choreographed windows. It’s all cutting edge stuff as far as what is possible with a Web browser goes, but there is one very big problem. It doesn’t work so great in all browsers, even browsers that supposedly support HTML5.

It’s all cutting edge stuff as far as what is possible with a Web browser goes, but there is one very big problem. It doesn’t work so great in all browsers, even browsers that supposedly support HTML5. If you go to the landing page that launches the video in Firefox or even the forthcoming IE9 (which isn’t out yet, but is very HTML5-friendly), it detects your browser and suggests you use Chrome instead. I received the following message on Firefox:
This site was designed with Google Chrome in mind and is unable to render properly in your browser. For the best viewing experience, we recommend downloading Google Chrome and trying this site again.
But wait, isn’t Firefox one of those modern browsers that supports HTML5? This isn’t the first time there have been issues with HTML5 compatibility. The…

Firefox hits 2 billion landmark for add-ons

Mozilla is celebrating a major landmark for Firefox, with two billion add-ons downloaded for the popular browser.

…Mozilla is celebrating a major landmark for Firefox, with two billion add-ons downloaded for the popular browser. Despite an increasing amount of competition, Firefox is still the second most used browser on the planet, with only Microsoft’s Internet Explorer holding a greater market share, and add-ons have been a key part of its rise to popularity.”Today marks a very special occasion in the world of Firefox Add-ons as we cross the 2 Billion download marker,” states the Rock Your Firefox blog. “We have a lot of people to thank for helping us reach this milestone: most of all, you!”Breaking targetsThe Firefox team acknowledged that they had smashed the internal target they had set for reaching the two billion mark. “When we reached 1 billion Firefox Add-on downloads in November 2008, we thought it would take us less than 3 years to get to the next billion, and with your help, we’ve gotten to 2 billion in half that time!” the team blogged. “With more than 150 million add-ons in use every day, we know that the…

IE9 vs. Chrome vs. Firefox: Microsoft’s Gaining Ground [VID]

…/ Do you like this story? Microsoft’s Internet Explorer may still hold dominant market share in the web browser arena, but it is quickly fading against strong competition from Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome. The IE browser has been much maligned for its lack of support for web standards and its poor performance against the competition.Enter IE9, the next iteration of the world’s still most-used browser. Microsoft is taking a completely new approach to IE9, embracing HTML5 and CSS3 and placing a heavy focus on web standards and speed.Yesterday, the company launched IE9 Platform Preview 3 at an event in San Francisco. What surprised us was that Microsoft’s presentation focused almost exclusively on how IE9 beats its competitors, ChromeChrome 5 and FirefoxFirefox 3.6.4. They ran test after test showing off its processing capabilities. What came up the most though was hardware acceleration: IE9 utilizes DirectX 10 to make far better use of the hardware. The results, we admit, are striking. Check out both of…

Hackers Say iPad Has More Security Holes

Hacking group Goatse Security says that the iPad has a potential security threat in its Safari browser, accusing AT&T and Apple of being lax on security.

…Goatse released an explanation of how the bug works on its website: To protect against hacks, Internet browsers typically restrict websites’ access to computers through communications channels known as “ports.” But Apple’s Safari browser failed to block off some illegitimate ports with unusually high numbers. A hacker could use those unguarded channels, in combination with Safari features that automatically execute software requests, to wreak havoc. “Basically, there is a hole in the iPad Safari version that allows someone to ‘own’ your machine, ” said Hemanshu Nigam, founder of SSP Blue, a cybersecurity consulting firm. “Once they break in, hackers can make your iPad do anything they want and take anything they want from it. It’s no different than saying, ‘Here you go, it’s all yours.’”Apple fixed the bug on the desktop version of Safari in March, when the security glitch was first discovered. But Apple has still not issued the patch for its mobile version, leaving the iPad vulnerable, according to the…

Google Is Getting Better At Turning IE Into Chrome As Chrome

Google Frame takes Microsoft’s Internet Explorer browser and basically turn it into Google Chrome via a plug-in. :)

…Back in September of last year, Google unveiled an early look at an interesting (and rather hilarious) new project: Chrome Frame. What it does is take Microsoft’s Internet Explorer browser and basically turn it into Google Chrome via a plug-in. Today, that plug-in has progressed enough that Google is graduating it to full beta status. We think it’s really stable, engineer Alex Russell tells us in noting the move to beta.
To use Chrome Frame, all a user has to do is go here and install the plug-in on either IE6, IE7, or IE8 running on Windows 7, Vista, or XP. For developers, it’s even easier to target these users: they just have to include a meta tag in their sites’ code and their pages will start to render in IE (with Chrome Frame installed) just as they would in Chrome itself.
A bunch of big sites are using the tag, Russell says. One that he singled out was WordPress.com. Anyone who visits a WordPress.com blog on IE with Chrome Frame installed will see it rendered in the Chrome-way this includes…

…An exciting thing happened to people who actually visit the Google homepage (rather than just using their Web browser’s built-in search box) today. They found Pac-Man, celebrating his 30th anniversary! The Penny-Arcade guys must be freaking out.
Update Guess what? It works on the iPad.

You click Insert Coin and are thrown into a classic game of Pac-Man. I beat the first level and decided that was enough for me.
I do love the careful balance Google maintains between stomping all over your reasonable expectations of privacy and offering up electronic tiddlywinks.
UPDATE I was curious as to whether this doodle would work on mobile browsers so I fired it up in the iPad. It sat there for a moment but when the Javascript loaded it started up and I was able to play the game by sliding my finger up, down, left, and right on the screen. Pretty fun….
