Facebook Alternative Diaspora Launches September 15

Diaspora, the much-hyped open source alternative to Facebook, will release its code to the world on September 15, but promises that its creators are just getting started.Earlier this year, Facebook was embroiled in controversy after it made significant privacy changes. Users didnt like having more of their information public, so they revolted.During the height of the crisis, four NYU students decided to create an open source alternative to Facebook. Their goal was to raise $10,000 for their summer project, but dramatic interest helped them raise over $100,000 through donations.

…t going to stop working after we release, Diaspora stated in its blog post. Ilya and Raphael are taking leave from NYU, and we will continue to develop and maintain Diaspora as a long term project. What will Diaspora look like? According to the team, it’s focusing on on building clear, contextual sharing. One of the open source social network’s features will be making it easy and intuitive for users to decide what content gets added and shared to their social circles. We’re looking forward to seeing the final product and trying it ourselves. …Do you like this story? Google’s Chrome browser is steadily increasing in popularity among consumers, and now it looks like Google is making a more concentrated effort to lure enterprise and corporate users too. As The Chrome Source points out, Google has now made the Chrome browser downloadable as an MSI file, which will make wide and remote deployment much, much easier for system administrators. In an effort to make the Chrome installation process easy (and to ensure users are downloading the latest version), the normal Chrome for Windows installation process downloads the installer package during the installation itself. There is a way to download Chrome for offline installation, but until now, Google hasn’t made it very easy for Windows System Administrators to do unattended installations, install Chrome from a network share or from a remote location. The MSI package will let administrators do that, which will make it significantly easier for large groups or organizations to migrate to using Chrome as…

Is Google Chrome Usage Soaring at Firefox’s Expense? [STATS

Google Chrome continues to gain browser marketshare, edging past Apple’s Safari in the U.S. and, apparently, also taking some users from Mozilla’s Firefox.

…photographer here.. definitely prefer Chrome to FF. Once Chrome’s library of extensions is beefed up and more people give it a chance, it’ll blow straight by FF. Michael Lee FoleyI switched from Firefox to Chrome a year or so ago, and haven’t looked back. Once Chrome got extensions, I was sold. Firefox ate up memory like it was grass. Chrome does too, but not nearly as badly as FF did. Michael Lee FoleyI love Chrome. I’ve been using it over a couple years now. Firefox ate memory like it was grass. Chrome does too, but not nearly as badly. Adam ZOne nice thing about Chrome’s built in Task Manager is that it showed me that it wasn’t the main website that was hogging resources but Flash sucking up hundreds of megabytes of memory. Not a Flash troll, just an observation. Hellioz Dogoli use chrome primarily, firefox for email only…and very very rare on IE.chrome freezes/crashes a lot if i open multiple tabs at the same time while the video at the other tab is loading first few seconds. but i still love it and…

…After some delays, Mozilla has released Firefox 3.6.4, the newest version of the popular web browser. It comes with one big addition: protection against crashing due to third-party plugins, most notably Adobe Flash. The updated browser, which you can download here, comes with dozens of bug fixes and stability upgrades. What the average user will care about most though is FirefoxFirefox crash protection, something that is a prominent feature of Google ChromeGoogle Chrome.Crash protection utilizes out-of-process plugins technology to run third-party plugins (specifically Flash, Quicktime, and Silverlight) in a separate process. In the past, a plugin crash would take down your entire Firefox browser. With crash protection however, the browser will stay running while the portions of websites controlled by the plugin will be disabled. It only takes a refresh to restart the plugin. There is a catch, though: only WindowsWindows and LinuxLinux users have access to crash protection. According to Mozilla, making crash…

New Flock Ditches Firefox for Chrome, Embraces Simplicity

Social media and networking-oriented web browser Flock has become somewhat schizophrenic today: the official website’s front page features the stable, Firefox-based version, but the new beta has a completely different underlying browser: Chromium, the open source web browser that powers Google Chrome.

…Social media and networking-oriented web browser Flock has become somewhat schizophrenic today: the official website’s front page features the stable, Firefox-based version, but the new beta has a completely different underlying browser: Chromium, the open source web browser that powers Google Chrome. Is this dichotomy a sign that FlockFlock simply doesn’t know where to go next? Perhaps. Touted as the social browser, Flock is basically another web browser previously FirefoxFirefox, now Google ChromeGoogle Chrome with a bunch of social networking features on top. And, approximately one year ago, when I reviewed Flock 2.5, it was aimed at social networking enthusiasts, trying to stuff every possible feature from TwitterTwitter and FacebookFacebook into the browser.Out With the Old, In With The New FeaturesCompared to version 2.5, the new Flock beta is completely different. Gone are the (overly?) complex menus, Facebook chat, and the all-encompassing My World view. The new, ChromiumChromium-based Flock focuses…

Battlestar Galactica gets a browser based MMORPG

If you’re a Battlestar Galactica fan then this is something you’re going to want to check out.

…If you’re a Battlestar Galactica fan then this is something you’re going to want to check out. NBC Universal has released a trailer for what appears so far to be an awesome looking game. Of course you can’t really see any gameplay, but just the same, we think the fans will appreciate this.
The game, which will be playable through a Web browser, is being developed by Bigpoint, is based on the Syfy reimagination of the series, not the original 1978 version, and features an epic battle between humans and Cylons….
