Firefox Gets an Update Thanks to "FarmVille"

Mozilla has issued a new update to its web browser Firefox because of errors caused by FarmVille, the wildly popular Facebook game.

…MedisoftI’ll be sure to install the “broke” version of Firefox on all my users PC’s.”No, I’m not blocking Farmville, not sure WHYYYYY it doesn’t work for you!” William TowerWell at least my Aunt will stop bothering me about her “Facebook program”. Philip WhitehouseIn my view it’s a poorly written but of code that needs to hang for 45 seconds before responding. Poor Flash code or poor Flash player in my opinion. georgeangeloNo thanks to FarmVille AND Firefox. Chrome is my lady. Liam CromarIf you want to manually set the timeout period (e.g. if you never play Farmville) I believe you can edit the dom.ipc.plugins.timeoutSecs preference in about:config to the value you want - correct me if I’m wrong, somebody… danfarmville is the biggest time-waster ever created. for mozilla to release an update to their browser just to fix that is sad.all those stupid games from companies like zynga should be abolished. animalbradAnother reason why chrome is better than firefox. Chrome is faster, and already had the plugin…

Microsoft’s Internet Explorer may still hold dominant market share in the web browser arena, but it is quickly fading against strong competition from Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome. The IE browser has been much maligned for its lack of support for web standards and its poor performance against the competition.Enter IE9, the next iteration of the world’s still most-used browser. Microsoft is taking a completely new approach to IE9, embracing HTML5 and CSS3 and placing a heavy focus on web standards and speed.Yesterday, the company launched IE9 Platform Preview 3 at an event in San Francisco. What surprised us was that Microsoft’s presentation focused almost exclusively on how IE9 beats its competitors, ChromeChrome 5 and FirefoxFirefox 3.6.4. They ran test after test showing off its processing capabilities. What came up the most though was hardware acceleration: IE9 utilizes DirectX 10 to make far better use of the hardware. The results, we admit, are striking. Check out both of…

…After some delays, Mozilla has released Firefox 3.6.4, the newest version of the popular web browser. It comes with one big addition: protection against crashing due to third-party plugins, most notably Adobe Flash. The updated browser, which you can download here, comes with dozens of bug fixes and stability upgrades. What the average user will care about most though is FirefoxFirefox crash protection, something that is a prominent feature of Google ChromeGoogle Chrome.Crash protection utilizes out-of-process plugins technology to run third-party plugins (specifically Flash, Quicktime, and Silverlight) in a separate process. In the past, a plugin crash would take down your entire Firefox browser. With crash protection however, the browser will stay running while the portions of websites controlled by the plugin will be disabled. It only takes a refresh to restart the plugin. There is a catch, though: only WindowsWindows and LinuxLinux users have access to crash protection. According to Mozilla, making crash…

New Type of Phishing Attack Goes After Your Browser Tabs

Tabnabbing operates in reverse of most phishing attacks in that it doesn’t ask users to click on a obfuscated link but instead loads a fake page in one of the open tabs in your browser.

…Aza Raskin, the creative lead for Firefox, has just posted about a new type of potential phishing attack, dubbed tabnabbing. Raskin has a proof-of-concept and an explanation for how this type of attack could work.Tabnabbing operates in reverse of most phishing attacks in that it doesn’t ask users to click on a obfuscated link but instead loads a fake page in one of the open tabs in your browser. Check out this tabnabbing scenario:You have a bunch of open tabs in your web browser, an e-mail page, Facebook, your bank account and maybe a bunch of news sites. While you’re reading your favorite MashableMashable.com content, the attack is able to hone in on tabs that haven’t been used or aren’t in focus and replace the favicon (the icon in your tab bar) and the title of the tab. When you click on that tab, a fake page is loaded in its place, maybe it is loaded to look like a standard login page.Because you already had this tab open legitimately before, you don’t bother paying any attention to the URL in the…

…Last week, the Web 2.0 Expo in San Francisco took place, where start-up Yapper showed off their new service to InformationWeek. The new service will allow ordinary non-programming folks to create their own mobile applications. The service will allow anyone to create iPhone, iPad, Android and even Blackberry apps in nothing but the web browser.
There’s a catch though, Yapper isn’t for developing just any application. You won’t be able to create your own game, it is for creating applications that grab RSS feeds. You can change the colors, icons and splash page of your application but the basic user interface is not changeable.
The Yapper service costs $199 for Blackberry and Android apps and $299 for iPhone and iPad apps. There is an extra $50 fee if you want to submit the application yourself rather than having Yapper be the publisher. If you want the output to operate as a web app that works on both iPhone and Android, it will be an extra $99 plus $50 if you want to send alerts to the end users.
In the video…
