Legal action on Zombie Cookies filed in US court

Lawsuit filed in San Francisco district court after firms resurrected deleted browser cookies.

…A legal challenge has been launched in the US against a number of websites amid claims that they were engaged in “covert surveillance” of users.
The lawsuit alleges that a number of firms, including Hulu, MTV, and Myspace, used a Quantcast Flash application to restore deleted cookies.
Cookies are text files used by web browsers to store user data.
The lawsuit says that the application was creating so-called “zombie cookies” from deleted files.
Quantcast has not responded to a BBC News request for comment.
The term “zombie cookie” was coined after the issue of traditional browser cookies being undeleted by Flash was brought to light in a 2009 paper by US researchers.
The study found that more than half of sites surveyed used flash cookies to store information about the user, with some using it to “respawn or re-instantiate cookies deleted by the user”.
“Flash cookies often share the same values as browser cookies, and are even used on government websites to assign unique values to users,” the paper…

OpenGL ES 2.0 Coming to a Desktop Near You to Speed Up WebGL

The Khronos WebGL working group is developing a 3D API for the web, bringing 3D content right to the web browser using open standards.

…This API has been adopted by many embedded devices such as consoles, mobile phones, handheld computers, and vehicles. As a subset of the full OpenGL 2.0 specification, OpenGL ES 2.0 limits the embedded graphics API to only the most common functionality, reducing the implementation burden for embedded hardware.
The Khronos WebGL working group is developing a 3D API for the web, bringing 3D content right to the web browser using open standards. This effort uses an OpenGL ES 2.0-like interface as its backbone. OpenGL ES 2.0 was chosen as a common denominator of 3D acceleration on devices supporting web browsers.
AMD has just announced support for OpenGL ES on desktop platforms. This means ATI…

Certified Lies: Big Brother In Your Browser

You probably feel safe when you see the padlock on your browser window indicating secure communication with your bank or e-mail account. What if instead of worrying about man-in-the-middle attacks, it became government-spy-in-the middle eavesdropping?

…a fresh installation of Windows 7 will list 15 CAs in the operating system’s Trusted Root Store. Sadly, however, this interface is terribly misleading as it doesn’t reveal the fact that Microsoft has opted to trust 264 different CAs. This means any web browser that depends upon Microsoft’s Trusted Root Store (such as Internet Explorer, Chrome and Safari for Windows) ultimately trusts 264 different CAs to issue certificates without warning. Firefox is the only major browser to maintain its own database of trusted CAs. Each of the 264 root CAs trusted by Microsoft, the 166 root CAs trusted by Apple, and the 144 root CAs trusted by Firefox are capable of issuing certificates for any website, in any country or top level domain. You don’t think the government will use their own CA which could be tracked back to them if discovered, do you?
To be fair, however, all encrypted streams that travel over the Internet are susceptible to government spying, not just those that use Microsoft technology.
How does this affect…

Comparison of Web Browsers on Linux

Introduction Web Browser Grand Prix 2: Running The Linux Circuit : Alright folks.

…”game” that aspect of the benchmark, for competitive reasons.

Well, there you have it. Whether or not Opera intentionally ‘gamed’ this benchmark is still up in the air. Without access to the source code, no one outside of Opera would know for sure. An Opera rep offered the initial idea that Profile-Guided Optimizations (PGO) may be to blame for the high Dromaeo scores seen in Windows. According to Opera, its OS X version (which doesn’t yet have PGO enabled) does not achieve absurdly high scores in Dromaeo. The company had no results available for its Linux version, and the rep didn’t know whether or not the penguin had PGO. Without any Linux data from Opera, we cannot further determine if PGO is truly the culprit. In the meantime, we are still waiting to hear back from the developers in Oslo for an official explanation for the high Dromaeo JavaScript scores.

As far as Google is concerned, thanks to Chromium, Mozilla has the smoking gun on the company’s Dromaeo shenanigans. In the last article, I reported…

BlackBerry 6’s WebKit-based browser bests the competition

Uh oh, looks like they’re still in the game!

…It’s been almost a year since RIM picked up Torch Mobile and locked its newly acquired division in a closet, telling those coders to not come out until BlackBerry had a world-class browser. Early tests from Salomondrin, the self-described “007 of the Phone World,” indicates that those tired engineers can now finally go home and get some sleep. The new WebKit-based browser, a part of BlackBerry OS 6.0, managed a score of 208 on the Acid HTML5 tests, measuring browser compliance and performance. Meanwhile the iPhone 4 scored 185 and HTC’s Incredible pulled down 151. Mind you, benchmark performance doesn’t always equate to real-world browser responsiveness, but regardless this is good news for CrackBerry addicts. The only question now is: when will they get their fix?

Update: The browsers were run through a suite of tests, and the above scores were actually from The HTML5 Test!…

Firefox Home hands-on: Firefox on your iPhone… sorta

It’s no Mobile Firefox, but Mozilla’s iPhone app puts all your links and tabs at your fingertips if Firefox is your primary browser on the desktop.

…Unfortunately, browsing history is only available using the search. There’s room for another button on the app’s nav bar, so we’re hoping Mozilla adds a browsable list of your history in a future update we can imagine plenty of scenarios where this would be handy.

Though it should come as no surprise, Firefox Home doesn’t use Mozilla’s Gecko rendering engine or its TraceMonkey JavaScript engine. When you click on any link, it loads in a custom WebKit view with a simple but nice looking UI. While it doesn’t look particularly “Firefoxy,” it does fit right in on the iPhone. It also offers an option to copy or e-mail a link to the current open page or open it in Mobile Safari.

The only other caveat that we noticed which is due to Apple’s policy on apps that access the open Web is that Firefox Home is rated…
