Motorola Droid’s next update to be Android 2.1

The browser’s now multitouch enabled, just like Google Maps 3.4. There’s no word on timing, and for all our source knows, this build could still very well fail testing — goodness knows it’s happened with plenty of pre-production firmwares in Verizon’s past. We’ll keep our ear to the ground and you do the same.

…We’ve just gotten the inside line on the next Droid update that’s making the rounds through Verizon’s testing department from one of our trusted sources, and overall, it looks like this should take users 95 percent of the way to curing pangs of Nexus One envy. Here’s what we’ve got:

It’s based on Android 2.1. The build currently being circulated is identified as 2.1 version 1, mirroring the update just pushed to the Nexus One last week.
Google Goggles is now pre-installed (no matter how unhelpful it may be).
The browser’s now multitouch enabled, just like Google Maps 3.4. Huzzah! No Flash, but then again, we weren’t really expecting that.
Interestingly, the home screen’s still got the same look as 2.0.1, meaning it doesn’t adopt the Nexus One’s rotating 3D grid of app icons — it’s still got the pull-up drawer tab at the bottom.
No active wallpapers. Bummer!
The news and weather widgets introduced on the Nexus One are included. Maybe certain capabilities of 2.1 are going to be restricted to devices…

Opera: Browser market is broken—thanks to Microsoft

Internet Explorer 8 is around the corner with “standards compliant” mode, but there are still certain parties that think Microsoft should do a lot more. Opera is one of them, and has a few tips for Microsoft to “fix” its browser issues.

…These are good suggestions for any browser, of course, although Opera has a particular bone to pick with Microsoft because it produces a competing product to IE. Opera, along with Firefox, Safari, and a smattering of smaller browsers, have been fighting tooth and nail to grab market share from the browser giant for some time now. That has proven to be somewhat difficult at least for Opera as Microsoft still ties its browser into its dominant operating system. And as long as Internet Explorer doesn’t (by default) work towards the
same set of standards as the other browsers, standards don’t carry the significance they should….

Google Pushes Chrome Browser As PC Battle Looms

Google has taken the unusual step of using real-world advertising to promote its Chrome web browser in Europe ahead of a regulatory change that will make it easier for consumers switch web browsers.

…Media

In a departure from its usual dependence on viral and word-of-mouth marketing, Google is running a billboard and newspaper ad campaign for its Chrome browser in the streets and underground train stations of London, Paris and Amsterdam.

The campaign comes as the European Union is gearing up to implement its so-called browser ballot, which will allow users to actively select the program they will use to surf the Internet when they use their computer for the first time.

It is also a sign of Google’s increasing willingness to engage with traditional media — in this case ad agency Omnicom, which is managing the campaign — many of whom are upset at what they see as Google’s profiting at their expense.

Chief Executive Eric Schmidt has said recently Google wants to help publishers survive the transition online.

“Two years ago, I think there was a Google way. You either took it or left it,” says Chris Hayward, head of UK trading at media buyer ZenithOptimedia. “My personal opinion is that now they’re…

Chrome for OS X: State of the Browser

The open source Google Chromium repository now has an OS X Cocoa shell. We downloaded and compiled the latest OS X build of Google’s browser, and we talked to the developers to get a sense of how long it will be before Mac users can get their hands on a working beta.

…Back in September, Google launched its Chrome browser. With advanced features like website task managers, visual histories, individual browser memory management, and even the ability to re-open tabs that you accidentally closed, Chrome promised to reshape the browser, offering new abilities and capabilities that went beyond the status quo. Windows users got immediate access to those capabilities, but Google has yet to release Chrome for OS X and Linux.
That’s not to say that Google been hiding its development progress behind closed doors. Chromium is the open source project that, like its metallic namesake, is used to make Chrome. The Chromium source code repository has remained available and updated since the September 2008 Chrome introduction. Since there hasn’t been any really big news or progress updates, Chromium for OS X and Linux has basically dropped off the radar for the past few months. But that doesn’t mean that progress isn’t being made. We recently checked out the latest iteration of the…

Google’s Latest Triumph: A non-iPhone-related Apple Beatdown

The buzz about Google’s Nexus One phone has been so deafening that maybe you missed a bit of news about the Big G’s minor triumph in another area: Its new-ish web browser, Chrome, “hit a milestone over the weekend,” Ian Paul of PC World reports, “when it became the third-most popular browser after Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox”.

…Is this really a story? Competition among free software?

Considering that browser home pages and search engine search pages get millions of page loads every hour…yes, it should be relevant to any savvy person in marketing/advertising.

Unless you’re all about newspaper advertising.

Oh, wait. That’s online too.

OK…just Yellow Page advertising.

Hmmm…that’s being moved to browsers too.

OK. I’ve got it. Those of you who market solely via bumper stickers can ignore what Google is doing in the browser wars.

Wait…but you put an URL on the bumper sticker, didn’t you?

OK, if you’re a true Luddite, you can ignore browsers. But…how the heck did you make this post on a web site?…
